Yesterday, the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) announced that they would be escalating their work to rule strike action effective Monday, January 13, 2020.

This will be split into 2 phases of work to rule sanctions:

Phase 3, Monday, January 13, 2020

Elementary teachers and education workers who are members of ETFO will not:

  • plan or participate in any assemblies, except to provide supervision to students;
  • participate in extracurricular activities except for those that are scheduled within the regular school day;
  • participate in field trips;
  • arrive at work any earlier than 30 minutes before the start of the instructional day for students (or for hourly-paid ETFO members, not arrive any more than 30 minutes before the start of the scheduled workday); and
  • remain at the worksite later than 15 minutes after the end of the instructional day for students (or for hourly-paid ETFO members, not remain later than 15 minutes after the end of the scheduled workday).

Phase 4, Monday, January 20,  2020

Elementary teachers and education workers who are members of ETFO will not:

  • Participate in any school board or Ministry professional learning

ETFO has also announced that if no agreement is reached by January 17, 2020, ETFO members will commence a full-withdrawal of services (strike) on a rotating basis effective Monday, January 20, 2020.  We do not know which boards will be affected and/or when and will do our best to keep you up to date as soon as we have more information.

Our priority remains for the safety of our students and we want you to clearly understand the status of our schools during any labour action. We will continue to monitor the situation and its impact on elementary students and will keep you updated as the situation changes.

We understand these changes will be frustrating for our students, families and caregivers, however, we want to assure you that these sanctions will not impact classroom instruction and student learning.

We will continue to do our best to keep you informed of any future changes.
